Durban experienced tumultuous weather resulting in a severe flood earlier in the year. The consequences of this left many residents of Durban destitute. More than 40 000 people were displaced in KwaZulu-Natal, prompting UKZN Extended Learning (UEL) to pledge aid to the relief effort within its capacity. Inspired by the actions of the Faith and Hope organisation, UEL decided to facilitate an initiative that would assist this organisation in supporting the community of Dassenhoek, which was greatly affected by the floods.
On the 25th of August, UEL was able to drop off non-perishable items at the kwaCetshwayo Community Hall in Dassenhoek. The donation was well received by both the Faith and Hope organisation and the community. Several community members of Dassenhoek recounted heartbreaking stories about how their homes and loved ones were swept away during the floods. They showed incredible appreciation for support, which they expressed through testimonials.
Ms Thembeka Ntabe (Chairperson, Faith and Hope Organisation) stated: “As the Faith & Hope organisation, our main vision is to help the community. As it stands, we are currently dealing with the victims that were affected by the floods, so that is why we are here. We are facing many challenges in our efforts to aid the community. Safety is one of the biggest concerns regarding the community hall that is being used to serve residents of Dassenhoek. This has even affected the number of people that can receive assistance as many have left to seek a haven elsewhere, especially the elderly. We would like to thank UKZN Extended Learning for their assistance in providing sustenance to the community.”
Despite their respective social responsibilities, all social and industry players are significant contributors to achieving real progress if they all work together. We must invest our resources into helping those in need during these challenging times, so we are committed to nurturing and protecting community development initiatives as a society. Taking action to rectify injustices in our communities requires us to stand up and act.
