Recently UKZN Extended Learning hosted a customised Business Communication course emphasising management reporting. This two-day programme took place on the Howard College campus with strict COVID-19 protocols in place. Communication is a crucial component of daily life, and without a doubt, effective communication improves development. To grow and remain relevant in business, exchanging information, opinions, and thoughts is imperative. Report writing serves to analyse the industry in all aspects of operation in a critical manner. Effective reporting provided by a company is an essential tool for guiding critical business decisions and providing an opportunity for companies’ owners and executives to investigate and solve issues. Following a comprehensive information collection and review, business leaders can conclude and make recommendations on the way forward. The outcome of the management reporting may explain why an issue has occurred or may identify performance problems and generally recommend a course of action.
Management can use business reports to gain insight into an organisation’s growth. Reports can provide essential details that business leaders can use to help develop future forecasts, business plans and improve decision-making. Business communication also helps managers track progress and growth and identify any irregularities that need further investigation. The key focus areas of this programme are communication theory and tools, communication in practice, and contemporary issues with an emphasis on using practical examples that delegates can apply in their work environment. Business reporting promotes transparency and accountability for many companies in the public and private sectors. In addition, businesses can compare their performance against others by regularly reporting throughout the year in an industry with similar activities.
“The significance of a report writing course is to ensure uniformity, take people back to basics, to understand that there are various components that make up a report in this report writing module and to ensure that reports are written in a way that are understandable to all the potential audiences. “
– said Jayne Whittaker while sharing her perspective on the importance of report writing in business communication.
