As the official Matric results were released early in January, universities and other institutions of Higher Education were jam-packed with post-matric learners wishing to pursue their studies in various professions. Although there was an increase in the grade 12 pass rate for 2018 to 79.4% from 75.1% in 2017 as announced by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga – university admission still seems to be highly impossible for some learners, as they are unable to meet the requirements set by universities for Science-related qualifications. UEL has ceased this opportunity to continually offer bridging courses by hosting the Annual Open Day event for Access courses in order to bridge the gap for those learners who almost qualified for UKZN admission but need to further improve some of their matric subjects.
Our Access courses which are currently on offer include Foundation Maths, Foundation Maths Online, Foundation Physics, Mathematical Literacy Upgrade to Grade 12 Mathematics, Certificate in Business Administration, and Certificate in Public Administration. Fundamentally, this event is considered as an information sharing session where learners and parents enquire about everything that they wish to know. This year’s attendees had the opportunity to engage with UKZN academics, staff members as well as previous delegates who have successfully completed the programmes and are now registered students of the University. Our Access courses, over the past few years, have produced a success rate of 90% and our goal is to reach 100% pass rate with 100% UKZN admission.
