UKZN Extended Learning was recently invited to attend SA Home Loans’ Business Breakfast where guests from various companies around Durban gathered in order to discuss the key learnings for corporate SA from the recently publicised Lamberti and Chowan case. This was a race and discrimination case in which Adila Chowan was dismissed from Imperial Motors following an investigation into a complaint she had laid that race and gender discrimination was the reason for her being overlooked for a promotion.
The dialogue for the business breakfast discussion was chaired by a number of panellists who are experts in employment and labour law related matters. These included Dr Hilda Grobler who is an Arbitrator and Mediator; Ms Nima Gagjee who is the CEO at Powsa Inc; Ms Nandi Manentsa who is the HR Director at SA Home Loans; Ms Omashni Leeladhar who is a Labour Law Attorney; Mr Rob Kelso who is the COO at SA Home Loans and Ms Janine Hicks who is a Lecturer at the UKZN School of Law.
The session was very interactive between the panellists and the audience, and the key learnings from the Lamberti and Chowan case included the importance of transformation, gender equality, antiracism and accountability of leadership in the workplace. The issues discussed were extremely relevant to our current corporate environment in South Africa, hence education plays a pivotal role in improving and transforming our society.
At UEL, we also offer a wide range of Law short courses which will equip you with the necessary labour legislation and procedures to ensure that accurate and ethical procedures are installed within the workplace. To learn more about our offerings please click here.
