Executives and senior managers play a significant role in ensuring the effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) processes in all government entities. Recently, government executives from various departments and municipalities gathered at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban, for the 3rd Annual Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation Skills Audit Indaba. This prestigious event was organised by Audit Roundtable in partnership with UKZN Extended Learning. The aim was to analyse current challenges and determine possible solutions in order to ensure the effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation tools, within the public sector.

During this two-day event, discussions were centred on topics such as: The role of HR Management in the performance management and evaluation systems; Innovation for public service delivery; Change management; and Social accountability. The mandate of every organisation (be it public or private sector) is to offer a product or render a service. With the correct M&E systems in place, organisations would definitely succeed in fulfilling this mandate. With the aim of assisting organisations with their M&E systems, UEL offers the course, Monitoring, Evaluation and Research Skills Programme. This programme imparts skills which will assist participants with the knowledge to design relevant M&E frameworks and engage in practical applications of M&E systems.

One of the guest speakers, Mr Andrew Avontuur – Acting Director of Gauteng Municipality mentioned the key characteristics in ensuring effective service delivery which included researching the needs of the citizens, benchmarking, developing indicators addressing the organisation’s long term goals, acquiring resources required to meet the desired outcomes and in addition to this, the right mindset is crucial in order to achieve positive results. We at UEL, also offer generic Management and Leadership Programmes which will assist in instilling the right mindset and skills, and therefore improving the organisations’ performance.
