Board members and business executives are tasked with enormous responsibilities to provide foresight, oversight, and insight while steering organisations toward a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical and legal governance, and financial management policies. With the aim to empower business executives, managers and board members, UKZN Extended Learning facilitated the Board Leadership Programme for two full days.

This programme is usually run in conjunction with and certified by CGF Research Institute (Pty) Ltd. Mr. Terrence Booysen (CEO of CGF Research Institute) graced our delegates with his presence as he taught and shared his invaluable knowledge on a number of topics including:  Legal duties & obligations; The purpose & functions of the board, particularly in the South African context; Board performance & assessment; and Global inter-connectedness & impact on organisations. Our guest speaker, Mr. Marlon Moodley (Managing Director at B2HA ICT Advisory) shared his expertise as he highlighted the importance of technology, cyber security & strategic risk management.

Our delegates were pleased with the training as well as the newly acquired knowledge and leadership skills. Echoing his fellow classmates, Mr Manesh Naidoo described his experience on the programme as follows:

“The Board Leadership Programme was an excellent stepping stone for future leaders in any field. It doesn’t only apply to directors but extends to prescribed officers of any entity. The knowledge that I have gained from this programme is priceless as it has giving me a new perspective on responsibility and accountability from a governance point of view. My Job role has taken on a new meaning as there is room for growth and promotion with the knowledge that I have acquired. I would definitely recommend this programme to any manager, leader or board member wishing to broaden their horizon”.

Navigating boardroom dynamics and clearly understanding the role each board member plays is vital to the success and effectiveness of a board. We realise that there is a critical need to enhance the opportunities for learning and development of directors and managers in private and public companies as well as state owned organisations.
