“We fell in love with Maths over again” says Foundation Maths Students
Our two-week Foundation Mathematics bridging course has come to an end. Students commenced the programme with fear, uncertainty and a fraction of hope, not knowing what to expect. However, after they had written the 3-hour exam, students felt positive and confident, having come such a long way and having received tremendous support from UKZN academics throughout their two-week journey. This programme was put together as an intense two-week (80 hour) programme that will allow students who pass with 60% and above access to study a UKZN degree where Mathematics is a prerequisite, provided that the students meet the other qualifying criteria of the University.
A few of these students were asked to share their experience with us which will, in return, benefit future students who may need this course, and this is what they had to say:
Asanda Nene: “This course has given me a second chance at pursuing my career in BCom Accounting and has restored my love for and confidence in Mathematics. The lecturers and tutors put in so much effort in making sure that we were always on board with them in class. The tutors brought in such a fresh energy and had interesting techniques and methods that kept us engaged in class. The environment was so different compared to high school and as a result it felt like it was my first time doing the subject. I’m hoping to get an above-average mark so that my dream of becoming a Chartered Accountant can be a reality in the next couple of years.”
Sbongakonke Dladla: “During this course, I had the most interesting two weeks of my life upgrading my marks in a subject that I had lost interest in. Little did I know that I was going to fall in love with Maths over again. All thanks to our lecturers and tutors who went the extra mile by giving us daily class tests and voluntarily sacrificing their Saturdays for us, making sure that we were ready for our big exam. As a result, I was smooth sailing throughout the exam, I only had a few challenges which were just worth less than 10 marks out of 150. I’m extremely appreciative of UKZN Extended Learning for giving me this opportunity which is a stepping stone towards my BCom degree where I’ll Major with my favourite subjects – Finance and Economics.
These testimonials depict the heart of our business and we look forward to hosting more students in our access programmes in future. On 6th May 2019, we will be hosting our Foundation Mathematics second intake and should you wish to be part of that class, please contact us or register via the website:
