We recently launched the Certificate in Forensic Investigation Techniques programme, which took place over two block sessions comprising 12 lecture days. The programme provides insights into the incorporation of forensic techniques into the criminal analysis. The application of forensic techniques and advances has significantly impacted the investigation process. By collecting information through forensic investigation, investigators can easily identify trends and solve cases faster. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for individuals with skills in forensic technologies advancement of crime and the technologies used to solve cases.
UKZN Extended Learning continues to exhibit its commitment to providing a fruitful learning experience for our delegates. This most recent cohort found that our knowledgeable facilitators presented the concepts and techniques explicitly and understandably. The facilitators provided content that maintained a suitable balance between theory and practice in the work environment. The delegates learnt a lot throughout the course, and the content was relevant to what they experienced in their respective fields. Delegates felt that they would now be able to implement the strategies learnt and practice the appropriate security measures within various departments after the course. They also understood the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities (PRECCA) and the Prevention of Organised Crime (POCA) Acts and their relevant application.
It is crucial to get to the critical facts as quickly as possible when dealing with an investigation. In most cases, these events occur unexpectedly, prompting the justice process that will happen accordingly. To obtain evidence that would be admissible, forensic investigators must aim for a successful finding. As a general rule of thumb, if a criminal prosecution is to be conducted, the case must be proven “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Therefore, the accuracy of the analysis is imperative as it is often used in court hearings, especially in criminal investigations. Consequently, it is essential to have fully equipped personnel that can facilitate the support needed at every stage of the process, from identifying, extracting, and analysing relevant data.
