The 18th of July is a day reserved to acknowledge the late former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. The commitment he had for the preservation of human rights, conflict resolution, and reconciliation is something to be admired and carried through everyday life. The celebration of Mandela’s life is a call to action for people to make a positive impact within their communities.
Amidst the chaos that is happening in South Africa with the riots at the moment, the relevance of this movement has struck now more than ever before. We need to act in bringing about positive changes within our communities, no matter how big or small those steps are. If each citizen plays their part towards positive change by fighting injustice and helping those around them, that impact can be far-reaching.
Many people are suffering as a result of issues that are bigger than themselves. This day is also a call to action for political officials to actively engage in conversations and show actions that commit to establishing sustainable local communities.
We need to emphasise investing our efforts into helping each other as a society during this tough time. This can be achieved through various channels that work towards reviving a value-based society that is driven by the spirit of ubuntu. Mandela once said, “It is in your hands to make the world a better place”, encouraging people to take responsibility for their communities. Mandela Day falls within this time of unrest and when community members need to support each other more than ever. Take this opportunity to set an example for the next generation that will continue the legacy of helping change the world for the better. This day is intended to inspire people in their diversity to find the good that inherently exists within.
