Investing in the well-being of children means you are investing in the future. Children are the leaders of tomorrow and deserve to have a space in which to flourish. Safeguarding their rights, dignity, and voices for a better future for us all is imperative. In 1954, the United Nations (UN) decided on establishing Universal Children’s Day as recognition for this goal. This day is celebrated on the 20th of November every year to promote the unity and welfare of children worldwide. Children from all kinds of backgrounds face unique challenges every day. However, in third world countries, children face challenges that compromise their basic human rights, such as a lack of education and access to medical facilities. Universal Children’s Day reminds people to act against these injustices and join the UN’s mission in their capacity in taking steps towards eradicating them.
According to the United Nations, November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, World Children’s Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on children’s rights.
The United Nations sponsor events that bring children and adults together to raise awareness. However, these events usually take place in the United States of America and many of the UN’s branches hold their own events. These large-scale activities do not mean you cannot do something in your community. There are various ways to participate in activities that promote Universal Children’s day. Bridging that gap between the young and the old builds a bond and creates a conducive environment for growth.
Here are some ways you can participate in Universal Children’s’ Day:
- Spend quality time with your child
- Help support a community volunteer programme for children
- Sponsor a child using websites like Save The Children South Africa by clicking here.
- Advocate for children’s rights by using your social media platforms and educate your family as well as friends.
