The official matric results for the Class of 2019 were revealed earlier in the month, after Education Minister Angie Motshekga addressed the media. The 800 000-plus matriculants who passed this year ended up improving on last year’s official pass rate of 78.2%, adding another 3.1% to the total.
Some of the provisional results included:
- Free State (88.4%) replaced Gauteng as the leading province
- Gauteng followed at 87.2%
- KZN with an improved pass rate of 81.3% from 76.2% in 2018
- Eastern Cape saw the biggest improvement, with their pass rate jumping up by 5.9%
- Gauteng with the highest number of Bachelor Degree qualifications, and the Western Cape with the most distinctions.
The official pass rate for this year’s school leavers stands at 81.3%. It’s a genuinely impressive step in the right direction, as this is the first time in a long time the combined pass rate for our matric results has surpassed 80%. Motshekga detailed the pain-staking efforts her department went to, in order to secure these matric results.
“Class of 2019 was provided with targeted support in order to succeed; educational strategies such as supplementary classes, and general support from communities. We also received support from NGOs, corporates and universities. Around 82% of boys that wrote passed and about 80% of girls that sat for exams passed.”
Although the matric pass rate has improved tremendously compared to previous years, most learners still struggle to meet University entrance requirements. With such a high percentage of Grade 12 learners not meeting the Mathematics and Science entrance requirements for study at a university, our Access courses are designed to give these learners a second chance. Learners can choose from a variety of our Access courses including: Foundation Mathematics; Foundation Physics, Mathematical Literacy Upgrade to Grade 12 Mathematics; Certificate in Business Administration and the Certificate in Public Administration.

A huge congratulations to the class of 2019! May the class of 2020 strive for success!
