Labour laws give structure to the workplace, and it is also defined as what employees and employers are responsible for. In some cases, it outlines rules required to provide direction for resolving workplace conflict. According to Klerck, et-al, “labour law is defined as the various body of laws applied to matters such as the relationship between the employee and the employer, remuneration, work conditions, trade unions, and industrial relations. In its most inclusive sense, the term comprises social security in the workplace” (Klerck, Murray and Sycholt, 1997).
UKZN Extended Learning (UEL) is serious about delivering exceptional courses to delegates. This was showcased recently, as UEL hosted delegates from different disciplines on the Certificate in Labour Law (CLL) programme. The sessions took place over a six-day period engaging in a number of different themes. The course key focus areas included “Dismissal” and “unfair” labour practices, Basic conditions of employment act, Employment equity, and dispute resolution. The themes were facilitated by a co-operation of experienced academics from the field of Law, including Professor Tammy Cohen, Dr Lisa Dancaster and Mr Anandh Jugath.
The CLL programme taught delegates about labour issues and to develop an understanding of the purpose of labour law. Delegates were able to gain a better understanding of the labour law practices that will not only protect them in the workplace but to also promote economic development, peace, democracy and social development.
Delegates shared their overview on the course and this what they had to say:
“The course content was difficult at the beginning for me but, the facilitators made it easy to understand. Facilitators notes were in order and clear and the facilitators were interesting and refreshing and not boring”,
“I enjoy the course. The professor has a good speaking and teaching style which keeps me interested. Lots of concrete and real life examples which make it easier to understand. They used a lot of very good slides which are well formulated and easy to understand”.
