Leadership in Action: Insights from the MDP and Nelson Mandela’s Legacy

13th April 2026

UKZN Extended Learning

We recently launched our first Management Development Programme (MDP) for 2026 in Durban. The programme is designed to strengthen core management competencies while enhancing participants’ capacity for strategic thinking. It provides a global perspective on organisational effectiveness, equipping managers to lead change and transformation and to operate confidently within complex and uncertain environments.

To conclude the first block session, we had the privilege of hosting a special guest speaker, Matthew Willman, the commissioned photographer to Nelson Mandela. Having spent a decade working closely with Mandela, and immersing himself further by living on Robben Island for 18 months to better understand Mandela’s experiences, Matthew shared powerful insights into servant leadership through a series of his photographs. He unpacked ten key principles, including healing, the art of persuasion, community building, active listening, empathy, self-awareness, and a commitment to team growth.

Matthew highlighted that leadership is a series of conscious choices, whether in the workplace or at home, and that by embracing these principles, individuals can cultivate the same inclusive leadership style that Mandela embodied. Reflecting on his final photoshoot with Mandela in 2011, Matthew asked Mandela how he could make a difference, Mandela’s response was: “To remain relevant, you must serve,” a sentiment that encapsulates the essence of his leadership legacy.

The MDP is delivered through a flexible hybrid model, allowing participants to attend sessions in person or join online in real time. The next intake commences on 26 August 2026. If you would like to be part of this impactful programme, we invite you to register today.
