UKZN Extended Learning

– by Nkosingiphile Ntshangase

Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is one of four modules that make up the University Education Induction Programme (UEIP). We recently hosted a group of academics on this module with the objective of improving their performance and understanding of their teaching and learning methods. This module has been strategically designed to contribute to the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s mission to achieve excellence in teaching and learning. As part of the Institution’s goal of establishing the University as the University of choice, the module focuses on creating a conducive intellectual environment for fostering a stimulating academic life.

This module was facilitated by Dr Caroline Goodier and ran for three days. This group had great diversity, with academics from various UKZN disciplines and varying experience levels. Delegates were able to learn from each other through the facilitation learning methodology, which created an environment that allowed for liberal discussions and interactions.

A substantial amount of module material was covered, accompanied by rigorous engagement of material amongst the delegates. The module encourages critical thinking that can be exercised within different contexts. It is imperative to equip educators with these skills, as they are responsible for nurturing many unique minds and their teachings have to reach all of those students in a limited amount of time.

The University Education Induction Programme (UEIP) aims to promote academics’ professional development through modules such as Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
