UKZN Extended Learning

– by Samantha Higgins

Mathematical Literacy upgrade at UKZN Extended Learning (UEL) is a platform for promotion to Grade 12 Pure Mathematics. This intense programme is a hub of learning, active participation and testing, allowing students focused intention and in-depth exploration of the subject. Students recognising the pre-requisite of Mathematics to enter into undergraduate programmes at UKZN make an important decision when they invest their time and effort on this bridging programme.

The class size is typically smaller than the traditional school numbers students are used to. This forum allows one on one interaction and open communication for teaching and learning to transpire. A student on the programme, Lungani Phungula who is upgrading to Pure Mathematics to pursue studies in Architecture, expressed that he enjoys being in a less crowded class, and he feels more at ease to ask questions. A fellow student, Zuma Mandisa added that she is enjoying the time focusing on one subject, in her step towards studying a BCom Economics. Olwethu Mbatha shared that her understanding of Mathematics has improved on the programme, she found the pressure in high school discouraging, but the motivating boost she has experienced so far is realising “that I actually can do it.”

Mathematical Literacy Upgrade to Grade 12 Mathematics is one of 5 Bridging programmes offered at UEL. It runs for a duration of 6 months – 3 days per week.
