UKZN’s Senior Management attends LDP programme

5th June 2019

UKZN Extended Learning

– by Noluthando Makhaza

At UKZN Extended Learning (UEL), we have recently hosted a group of UKZN staff members for the Leadership Development Programme (LDP). The LDP is one of our annual programmes which is targeted at mainly senior staff members in the various Schools and Colleges of the University. This programme is designed to assist our leaders in navigating the dynamic economic, social, cultural, physical, and regulatory environments shaping Higher Education in Africa.

The first block module of LDP was facilitated by a team of well experienced academics – Dr Jairam Reddy, Ms Zinhle Mpungose, and Mr Nigel Chiweshe. Case study discussions and presentations were centered on The South African and Global Trends in Higher Education; People Management: Challenges in Higher Education; and Legal and Ethical Issues in Communication and promotion. Sharing his experience with us, Mr Vishnu Govender who is the School Operations Manager at the College of Health Sciences, stated the following:

“Having worked at the University for over 25 years, and having gained enormous experience over the years in various roles, the LDP has been a complete breath of fresh air. Basically what I have learnt over the past three days is what I deal with on a daily basis. As much as we still have two more block modules to complete, it feels like I have gained a lot already and I have so much of knowledge to take back to my staff and share with them. During this block, it has also been a complete honour to have been taught by the University’s former vice chancellor – Dr Jairam Reddy. I truly admire his work ethic, knowledge and wisdom”.

The LDP programme supports delegates to articulate a long-range vision for their respective Colleges/Schools, inspire a diverse workforce to move toward shared goals, secure adequate resources to implement goals and track the trends that shape the needs for human resource development in their economies and broader societies.
