UKZN Extended Learning (UEL) colleagues were delighted to travel to Kimberley at the end of May to deliver a customised training programme; Impactful Leadership for Women, to the ETDP SETA Northern Cape. This training intervention drew on the open Impactful Leadership for Women course and was customised with the intention to build the capacity of Principles, Deputy Principles, Heads of Departments, and District Officials as well as Head Office Officials to perform their duties with due diligence as leaders in a schooling environment.

This customised programme was designed with the key aim to expand management and leadership capabilities. This 2-fold approach enhances technical competency by building management expertise, including people/team management and provides tools to develop leadership skills and methods, that impact effectively towards an organisation’s objectives. In this case the critical focal point was women leaders in an educational environment, hence topics were contextualised and explored in-depth.

The course was facilitated by Ms. Pinkie Mthembu, Dr Rudi Kimmie, Dr Sibusiso Bayeni and Sibonelo Blose, over a five-day session. Comments and feedback from delegates included, eagerness to share knowledge gained with colleagues and community members and added insight into personal leadership approaches. Two testimonials from delegates really made an impact:

“The decision-making presentation was the highlight, since the type of decisions one takes as a leader will either build or destroy the school or organisation. It was also good to hear that decision making goes with good leadership and management strategies.”

“I have learnt a lot in the workshop. I am a changed person and know how to handle emotions; I know how to approach conflict situations. I know what type of a leader I am.”

The next in-take for the open Impactful Leadership for Women which will be held at UEL’s Innovation Centre in Durban is the 5th November 2018.
