The Durban Exhibition Centre was set abuzz by a multitude of investors in our ‘Future Leaders’ at the Youth Employability Indaba & KZN Career Expo 2018. The convergence of exhibitors at this event created a hub of information, inspiration and career guidance for hundreds of aspiring youth in attendance. The key message for the initiative being creating an enabling environment for Youth.
UKZN Extended Learning (UEL) was a proud exhibitor at this three day event, comprising of Tertiary Institutions, Professional Career Associations, State Owned Enterprises, Government Institutions and Corporate Companies. Hundreds of learners and young adults congregated onto the exhibition floor with an excitement to engage and keen to touch as many bases as possible. UEL received varied interest and attention throughout the expo, from teachers enquiring about Academic Development Programmes; a young manager currently managing projects but with no formal project management training; a junior employee needing to up-skill to an intermediate financial level, to a student interested in learning sign language, amongst others.
The majority of the attendees were high school students, which offered us a great opportunity to inform matriculants about our Foundation Mathematics, Foundation Physics, and Math Literacy Upgrade Access Programmes – whereby students attend an intensive study programme to upgrade their final matric mark, making it possible to gain access to certain Colleges at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The feedback we received from graduates who have spent time actively seeking employment, highlights that hiring companies are focusing on candidates with diverse educational and training backgrounds, including diplomas, degrees and short/long term courses.
UEL offers a variety of subject genres including: Management and Leadership, Finance, Supply Chain and Project Management, Languages, Access/Bridging Courses and Law.
We are currently running our second intake of Foundation Physics and Foundation Mathematics for the year. Our next intake for Mathematical Literacy Upgrade to Grade 12 Mathematics starts on the 9th July 2018.
