Testimonials from Foundation Maths

Foundation Math participants are now ready for university!

UKZN Extended Learning recently ran their intense two week (80 hour) Foundation Math course that allows students who pass with 60%, access to study a degree at UKZN, where Mathematics is a pre-requisite, provided that the applicant meets the other qualifying criteria of the University. Due to the intense nature of this course, only individuals who completed their Matric in the past three years were allowed apply.

There are very few opportunities in life that are really worth taking and present themselves a second time. With such a high percentage of Grade 12 learners not meeting the Mathematics entrance requirements for study at a university, this course is designed to give these learners a second chance.

The course allowed students to concentrate on just one subject instead of six or more, improve their understanding of mathematical concepts, gain confidence as they worked through examples on their own and draw on the experience and skills of a Mathematics specialist in the classroom. “Foundation Math was very helpful, as I can now sit down, listen and study maths. We learnt more study techniques which gave us hope and insight into the things we would learn in university.” said Foundation Math participant, Nobuhle Zulu.

Siphumele Gumede expressed, “My experience was amazing! I couldn’t go to university with my high school maths mark and I can now go to university with my mark. In high school I couldn’t sit with myself and do maths. I couldn’t believe that 2 weeks would be enough.” Transitioning into the University environment can be quite a daunting experience but participant, Rachel Birch expressed that “the lecturers explain everything very well and are very approachable. It is also easy to make friends in class because we are all in the same boat.”

Due to popular demand, this course will commence again in the second semester from the 4th of July. To register for this bridging course, please follow the link below that leads to our new and improved website: http://ukznextendedlearning.com/course/foundation-math/

Bridging/Access Open Day

Bridging/Access courses are short intensive courses designed for the secondary school learner and mature students entering tertiary study. It is for students who are not confident in their preparation for university, or those who do not meet the accepted knowledge requirements. These courses only teach up to an introductory level and may assist in narrowing the gap between secondary school and university studies. We offer two Math bridging courses and one Physics bridging course for students that are weak in either of these two subject areas. Completion of either of these courses allows students who pass, access to study at UKZN provided that the delegate meets the other qualifying criteria of the University.

Foundation Math is an intensive 2 week course for school leavers who passed Mathematics in their final examinations but are looking to upgrade their mark through this course.

Mathematical Literacy Upgrade to Grade 12 Mathematics is a 6 month course intended to upgrade Mathematical competency. School leavers who passed Mathematics Literacy in matric can upgrade their skills to the required NSC Level Mathematics on completion of this course.

Foundation Physics is a 3 week course that aims to enhance the competencies of students in Physics to the level of that required for entry into science-related degrees at UKZN.
